About Cold Crops

New gardeners may think that seeds can’t be planted outside until June 10th. That’s an important date for gardeners here on the Island; it’s when the danger of frost has mostly passed, and the soil has warmed up to make it the ideal time for planting some seeds.

Have you heard of “cold crops?” Seeds for these veggies germinate in a cooler soil temperature. Many of them can be sown as soon as the soil can be worked.

Cold crops include:

Arugula

Beets

Broccoli

Brussels sprouts

Carrots

Cabbage

Cauliflower

Collards

Kale

Kohlrabi

Lettuces and other greens

Mustard

Onions

Peas

Radishes

Spinach

Swiss Chard
